Well there you go, the new G&P 130 round magazine!

As soon as I heard about the new G&P magazines, that would hold 130 rounds but would not require winding, I had full intentions on buying them as soon as they came out. I loved the convenience of the standards, and couldn’t stand the constant and even tiring winding of the hi-caps. But buying all Marui standards would mean airsoft bankruptcy. To my complete approval, they were going to be sold at a very affordable, and cheap price of $18 at Maryland Airsoft. (www.mdairsoft.com) Of course I didn’t want to jump into something that quickly, because it really seemed too good to be true, that such a cheap and efficient magazine option could exist. I made sure to ask Brian of Maryland Airsoft how he felt on the magazines. He provided a quick blurb/review that mentioned exactly shot. The results were that is was flawless with .20 gram BB’s on both semi and fully automatic. On .25 gram however they skipped here and there on semi, but was flawless on full-auto. This was prior to any lubing, and he implied that he felt lubing would make the .25g firing flawless as well. There will be more mentioned on this later.

The results were good enough for me, I rarely use .25g BB’s anyway, so I went ahead and bought four magazines, two for me, and two for a guy on my team. My magazines came in a day after I ordered since I’m located in Maryland as well. The first thing I noticed was that they were heavier, and had a different color. The heaviness was in no way a problem, it gave the magazine a better feel, and it was a lot more solid (so I think) then a Marui magazine. The bottom plate on these doesn’t rattle as easily as Marui ones do, so that’s always a plus. As for the color, it was slightly duller, and was a little closer to the color of the actual gun and at some angles, seems slightly blue. This can never pass as the color black or even really dark gray, as the Marui magazines can. I will tell you honestly that it slightly bothered me when I first got them, but it quickly disappeared for no reason in particular. You also have to keep in mind they are going to get banged up anyway, and looks don’t matter in a firefight. But it’s almost a fact that the Marui magazines look better in the gun. Its really not a problem, they do greatly resemble one another, but I’m just making sure readers know there will be a difference, and you will notice it. Don’t let it be a reason for you not buying them, unless your the REALLY picky type.

G&P mag (left) has the gray color to it, and if you held one in your hand it may even have a bluish tint at first. Marui (right) is darker.

The next thing I decided to do was load them up. I was thinking that if the magazines ever hit problems, it would be because of the long spring may be too hard to compress, or not having enough power to push the BB’s. Well I loaded it up to 90 BB’s and then it almost completely stopped. Nothing more was going into that gun so I thought. I was fine with it, I assumed it needed some breaking in, and I was right. However I was able to complete the load by jamming them down there, with the loading rod. I had to use some momentum, and the rod was actually going full speed into the tube, but from their once it budges a little, it gets easier. I assume that this is where the spring turns that last corner; it will happen to you after one loading rod goes into the magazine. The second magazine went through the same process with identical results. Also a nice feature is the easy unload on the G&P magazines, they have a spring release on them, much like hi-cap magazines.

Here you go, the tops of the magazines. The G&P magazine, (left) has the spring release on the top, and is a little lighter. Marui mag (right) does not have this feature.

Now it is time to shoot the thing. So I put it in my completely stock M16a2 and walked outside. I began plinking around, without even realizing it was a new magazine since everything was going the same as the other magazines. Then it skipped then shot twice, then skipped and then shot twice again at the end and ran out…. So I thought. The first thing I thought was, “Was that actually 130 rounds? It only felt like 70, or 80.” So I popped out the magazine to see some BB’s still in the magazine. So I figure there is a few left over like a Marui hi-cap, I figure 5 BB’s max. I pull the spring on the magazine with the result being complete horror and disappointment, about 30-40 BB’s sprayed me in the face and scattered everywhere.

This was pretty disappointing… I took the second magazine out of my pocket, and gave it a quick look over, and then put it in, and paid a lot more attention to the firing of this magazine. So far so good up until 80-90 shots, and then skip, two shots, skip, two shots, empty… Hmmm, this sounds familiar. Pulled out the magazine, angry and half-heartedly and pulled back the spring, and my expectations were fulfilled and another 30-40 BB’s got me in the face. Next I got a call from my teammate who received the other two magazines informing me of their bad results. Now I was mad… After reading two positive reviews, one from Airsoft Players, and the other from Maryland Airsoft, I had received horrible results in both magazines. Now, I was not angry with anyone but me for not looking more into it. Airsoft Players never mentioned how they shot anyway, so Maryland Airsoft was whom I was worried about.

Now I have dealt a fair amount with Maryland Airsoft with great results. I did not think, or expect that the magazine review was made to make sales only, and was untruthful. I believed all the results recorded were true, but still wanted to look into the situation. I first did the correct thing, and assumed I did something wrong, or there was something I could do. I e-mailed them, and got a quick reply saying they have heard of similar problems as mine, which were solved by lubing, and just breaking it in. So from there I assumed that these magazines would be fine. Since Maryland Airsoft has a 30-day warranty, and I was still covered I wasn’t worried about losing money, but worrying about the failure of a great, and promising product.

So the next test comes. I sprayed my silicone oil into the top of the magazine, as well as into the BB’s and prepared for the testing. While loading, the oil made a huge difference, and the rod glided the BB’s in rather then jamming them down the first time around. So now their loaded and I prepare the same M16a2 to do the tests. Kind of scared I begin the test with the gun shooting flawlessly, as it did the first time. I continued to fire for a while not realizing really how many I had actually shot, and finally ran out, with no dry fires before, and no live fires after. I took a deep breath and took out the magazine to first see the regular 2-3 BB’s roll out, and then looked into the magazine…. NOTHING!! This made me happy, the gun shot all 127 rounds (excluding the three that rolled out) flawlessly, and the second magazine did exactly the same. I was back to being happy about the product, as well as happy with Maryland Airsoft’s help to getting them working.

Well overall, and in conclusion, they are some nice magazines. They do require a little maintenance, but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. They had to put a powerful spring in there, saw all the BB’s would fire, and so it wouldn’t go bad fast. But since you have to push back such a strong spring, and there are so many BB’s in there, you have to expect to put a little oil in there to get things going. Not too bad though, couple of sprays in the magazine and it is flawless. Whatever you do, don’t decide not to purchase these because of my difficulties. Mainly because they can be fixed completely and easily. Also because it wasn’t happening to anyone else. There was some question to whether it could be my Airsoft Elite BB’s. I don’t see why it would be, but if anyone else sees that connect, let me know.

Now here is my, “Who should buy it?” section on the magazines. If you are the kind of guy who only puts 30, in his gun, or 33 so only 30 shoot, these are obviously not for you. There is no need for you to get a 130 round magazine, when you can by a 68 that is a couple dollars more, but looks better, and requires less maintenance. If you are the kind of guy who buys standards for silence, or lack of winding, these are for you! They are perfectly silent, even more so then my Marui since the bottom plate rattles, and of course there is no winding. So you can have twice the amount of rounds as a Marui, for less money. If you are a hi-cap guy, because you don’t want to pay for all those standards (like me) then these are perfect for you. Two G&P magazines are about the same price, but a little more then 1 Marui hi-cap. If you take 2 times 130 you have 260 rounds total in those two magazines. The hi-cap only has 40 more with 300. Another thing to consider is that hi-caps leave like 20 rounds in there after its empty, so that could lessen the difference. Either way, a couple of dollars more, and a couple less BB’s are well worth the silence, and the lack of hassle.

I would also like to go back and address the .25-gram BB issue. Though I have not yet tried them yet, I will and update this review. I do though assume they will work flawlessly. Considering the difference the oil made with the .20 grams I think it will carry over the .25 grams. The review that said the .25-gram BB’s didn’t go so well was also made without oiled magazines. For not oiled, skipping here and there only on semi-automatic is not so bad. Again, I will test it out and get back to you.
