Brief Background

The FAMAS, which stands for Fusil d'Assaut de la Manufacture d'Armes de St-Etienne is France's preferred weapon of choice for their military. Marui chose to replicate the G2 *I think* However instead of keepin the bipods, they chose to replace it with sling swivels. The large handguard makes it easier to pull the trigger if you were to use gloves.

First Impressions

This is the first AEG I have had and when I first recieved it in the mail I was in total awe. The box was rather large and not to mention quite hefty. I ordered it from Combat Depot. Anywyas I opened the box and felt like a complete kid. Inside was the FAMAS SV itself, maruis loading rod and cleanin rod, and a small bag of 200 .25 bb's along with the instruction manual. I must say that the weapon does look somewhat... rather plasticy but this isn't that big a deal. This was one of Maruis first weapons so aesthetic wise they were still learning. Anywyas over time the plasticy shine wears off and it begins to look somewhat more realistic. The charging handle is operable but doesn't serve any purpose. However it does make a very nice *shlack* sound when released.

The Iron Sights

The iron sights are both made of plastic. My only gripe is that the front side is able to move left and right quite freely. This isnt' a big thing but if you accidently bump it and your trying to make accurate shots you would have to compensate for the difference or try and readjust them again. The back sighgt has 2 different options. The night sights where the apperature is rather large, and the *sharpshooting* sights where it is smaller. I prefer having the night sights open since it's a lot easier to aim with using a pball mask. *the field we play at requires it* However if you were to use goggles or something the sharpshooting sights will work rather well.

The Magazine

The FAMAS came with a standard lo-cap mag. To load it is the same as all the other mags. Load up the bb's inside the loading rod, insert it into the top of the magwell and using the solid *ramrod* type thing push the bb's into the magazien. To load the mag is a bit tricky. You need to angle it at about 30 degrees to get it in right. you know you got it in when you hear a very distinguishable click. Putting it in vertically won't let the mag catch. If you do that you would either have to slap it in or take it out and try again. I dont' advise on doing that since it *might* damage the thing that keeps the mag in place... then again I'm not 100% sure on that one.

The battery

The FAMAS is capable of taking a large type battery. The biggest would probably be a 8.4 volt 3000 mAH battery. The battery goes into the foregrip. Now gettin it in there was kinda tricky for me at first. So if thise seems confusin please bear with me. By the trigger there will be a type of... switch thing. You need to push it 90 degrees to the left. *picture you shouldering the rifle and pushin it left* Once it hits 90 degress it'll click. Push it another 90 degress untill it clicks again to release the foregrip. hold the switch there sicne it has a tendency to bounce back into the second position *at least for me anyway* then CAREFULLY pull off the foregrip. I find it easier to connect the battery first then place it in. Make sure to tuck in the cables so it doesn't get caught when puttin the cover back on. To put the cover back on, release that same switch and push it back to the second position. Then slowly and CAREFULLY place the cover back on and slide it back into place and voila, your ready to rock and roll.

Hopup

The hopup is located above the magwell underneath this plate type thing. It's hard to descrbie but I took a picture if your having trouble finding it. If the picture isn't workni this is also located in your users manual. Anyways the hopup if you dont' already know gives the BB a backspin allowing you to get it to go farther distances. Turnin the dial clockwise raises the hop up giving the BB more backspin while turning it counter clockwise reduces the backspin and therefore droppin the range. Keep in mind that the more backspin you give the bb, it will sail up. So if you in CQB conditions you might want to keep the hop up low or else your shots will sail right over your targets head. However in the field you may adjust the hop up to whatever amount you feel necessary.

Life the plate up, slide it off to access the hop up dial

Selector Switch

Now this was somewhat odd since the selector switch is at a really uncomfortable place. It's at the very end of the rifle underneath. The switch is very crisp and clicks into each setting. However to switch back and forth is a problem since you have to raise the rifle, hold it in one hand and then bring it back down. This isnt anything major but when compared to other rifles / smg's theres is a bit easier to use.

Firing

Ok enough with all that and down to the performance. Like most stock Marui guns this performs about the same as all of em. However the FAMAS uses a rather old EG 560 motor. This doesn't allow you to use a stronger spring. *anything higher then a system m120 or equivalent* However the tradeoff is that it has a VERY fast ROF. It is said that thise AEG is capable of firing at bout 1000 RPM's. And I am very much inclined to believe that. The accuracy of the FAMAS is very good because of it's long inner barell length. The inner barell length is about 472 mm. This is longer then most other rifles. The bull pup design is the one to thank for this. This allows you to have decent ranger in a compact state. Anyways I can hit a soda can most of the time at about 20m. Hittin a man sized target shouldn't be hard up untill 50m maybe with the hop up properly set.

Performance over time

Well I have owned this AEG for about 4 months now and I haven't had any major problems. This is a great beginners weapon because of it's durability, and it's not to heavy compared with other AEGs on the market. The only problem I found is that you can't rapidly pull the trigger on semi auto. sometimes it makes the gun lock up and wont' let you fire on semi. However to remedy this problem, just switch it to automatic, fire a couple shots and switch it back to semi. If it doesn't work the first time try again. This normally does the trick. Besides, why would you want to try to shoot rapidly using semi when you have the extremely high RoF for automatic

Accessories

There aren't really much accessories out there for this, however there still are a few. Marui makes a scope mount, so you could either slap on a red dot or a normal scope on the top. Also you could either use a suppersor or Marui's full auto tracer unit. You may want to get a sling since well, you may / may not get tired of carrying this thing throughout the day. Internally the FAMAS is capable of takin up to a m120 max. However the most I would go would be a m100 just to be safe. There are tightbore barells for this as well. www.airsoftgear.com makes a FAMAS bull barell which is bascially an outer barell extension allowin you to put a PSG-1 length inner barell in which is the longest there is I think. But aside form that, that's all I know of that are compatible.

Conclusion

All in all this is a very good gun. Don't let it's looks fool you. It's very durable, accurate and has a very nice RoF. Plus if your going for uniqueness it'll surely be something different from all the armalites, ak's and g36c's out there. I rate this AEG a 9 because the only drawback is the lack of internal upgrades it is capable of. It is ambidextrous which is a plus for lefties as well.
