CA G36KE In Box
Background Info:
One of the most well made assault rifles created by Heckler and Koch. This gun and its brothers are currently used in the German and Spanish armies and law enforcement agencies around the world. It uses the 5.56mm x 45mm NATO round, except for the SL9 SD I believe which uses the 7.62 round. The other rifles like it are the SL9 and SD version, SL8, G36, G36E, G36K, G36KE, G36KV, and G36C. It also has ambidextrous controls. Known to be more reliable than the M16. Overall an excellent gun.
Specs:
- 330 fps with .20gram
- V3 mechbox
- EG1000 motor
- 1.5X scope
- About 34 inches long
- Inner barrel is 355mm in length
- For more detailed specs search the web.
First Impressions:
I was beyond excited to get this gun. Since I was leaving I drove down the street looking for the UPS delivery man. Showed ID and now I had it.
This gun came in a regular cardboard box. I purchased the gun from Airsplat and they provided me with excellent service despite other beliefs. This is also the cheapest place to buy it from, so far with “free shipping”.
When I tore open the box with bloodied hands I looked at the gun. It comes in a regular CA box with the gun on it. On the inside where it is held by foam they use a foam mold that can hold either the G36 or G36k. It comes with one 470 hi-cap magazine and a very long loading rod. Let’s not forget the CA Catalogue and Brief Instruction Manual. The color is a dark grey black compared to the MP5K which is full black. You won’t tell until you hold them together.

CA G36KE On Floor
It has a very solid and hefty feel and is quite large (I’m only 5’5”). It’s front heavy because of the battery and the light folding stock. It has an orange painted tip, so you would have to paint it, to be black. I sanded it down and spray painted it. I have not figured out a way to remove the flash hider and would like to, to put on a nice silencer. It would’ve been nice to have the 14mm G36c threads, but CA was nice enough to take it away (prove me wrong please).

Here’s a picture for size comparison
The Battery:
The G36k can take a Stick battery or a Mini battery based on my experience. Stick batteries are easier to fit. I’m not sure about others. Some say buy a nun-chuck battery for 9.6v but it looks like a 9.6v stick will work perfectly.
When installing the battery, it’s easier to flip the gun upside down and rest the battery on the barrel. You slide the foregrip back on (you have to push the sides out a little bit, very simple) and with some slight adjusting you can slide the pin in. Unlike the MP5 series this pin doesn’t have a metal clip, but is a solid pin with indentations. I find it better than the MP5’s. Putting a large battery that goes past the rail mounts may make it difficult to mount anything on the bottom rail, but I have nothing on there so I don’t know.

This is the small space for one more cell
The Folding Stock:
This is a great bonus for the gun. When folded it’s a little larger than a SMG but it’s easily maneuvered for quick shots (even though I prefer the MP5K in CQB). It gets in the way mildly when closed. If you are left handed it blocks the right selector switch, but is still easy to hold and switch with your index finger. It feels nice and solid with a very tough plastic/rubber butt cap. To close, you simply press the button in and swing. When it makes the whole trip it clasps onto a little hook. Folding and unfolding is a breeze and is very necessary sometimes. There are 4 small holes in which you can stick your pins in while changing batteries, very useful. There are also sling mounts, but I have no idea how to use them (please help).

The Size of it when stock closed

Other side, notice small holes
There is a G&P KV style stock out that can house a 9.6v 3300mah battery, but can’t be folded or retracted for obvious reasons. Unless you shoot a lot it’s not worth the $90 for stock and $60 for custom battery to me. I would rather switch more and fire less.
The Sight and Carry Handle:
This is both good and bad. It has a black reticle with all the markings, very useful for long range. It’s adjusted by allen keys but so far it’s already dead accurate. I’m not sure how to adjust up and down as it says T& H (lil help please). It’s the Export sight version which is 1.5x. It’s actually quite well made for daytime. It’s a very big pain to aim with a paintball mask with the stock out. With it in, it’s a little easier. The carry handle is very sturdy and can support the whole gun if you hold it (I suggest not bouncing rapidly with it). You can remove the carry handle and it will expose little rails. I’ve seen others mount red dots on the back rail and flip up sights on the front for a G36c, but I’m not sure yet how to apply it to this one (please help). Without these rails I doubt there’s a way to mount any type of sight that could be useful. I think I might custom mount a rail on top, so I can fit a small reflex site for night games. Star produces the other carry handles, but from what I hear they are not compatible. However they look very nice. Other than this, the sight is excellent.

Carry Handle Removed
(when removed the two halves of the body seem to come apart)

The little rails exposed which for a M4 see-through mount are just too small.
The Magazine:
This feels like tough plastic, but I don’t recommend dropping it. The spin wheel on the bottom is the opposite the TM ones which is odd, but makes little difference. It has a small opening where you can fill it up. As stated before it can hold 470 rounds. Many people say there is a lot of rattle in hi-caps but when running and crawling it was almost inaudible unless you violently shook it. I hope someone makes a reinforced version of some sort. MAG also makes 100rnd Mid Caps which I might grab.

The top of the Magazine with it open

Spin wheel going the opposite direction of TM’s?
The Hop-Up:
So far it’s great with no trace of being a lemon. With pulling back on the Charging Handle it exposes a dial hop-up. Merely adjust and you are done. The handle is somewhat plasticky but seems durable as long as you don’t try to slap it. I would prefer a metal one, but I’m not sure where to get one.

Handle pulled back and Hop-Up exposed
Is it comfortable?
I was amazed how ergonomic it was. The pistol type grip is more comfortable than the TM guns and the selector switch is crisp. For the foregrip it somewhat conforms to your hand shape. I do intend on buying rails and adding a Proud Tactical “Fore-pod” with a bipod inside the rail mounted foregrip.
EWW Trademarks, Nice Selector switch

Performance:
This is a very quiet, relatively accurate gun with a fast ROF, very suitable for CQB/Woodland. I’m going to upgrade mine to about 350 FPS with Prometheus spring and tightbore barrel. I would like a silent head kit that won’t screw up (suggestions?) I’ll update accuracy with the upgrades. Range is uncertain, but it’s easily 100ft.

10 FT on SEMI, Nothing that isn’t expected.

20 FT on SEMI, I think the one stray shot was me

20 FT on AUTO, The line to the top right is me walking it to the center

50 FT SEMI, Although this seems very inaccurate, all targets were from protargets.com and were only 6in. across. I suggest Mytargets.com for free print-up targets.
In Conclusion
This gun was the main reason I got into airsoft and to have finally gotten it, it feels very good. Classic Army has made a good piece right here.
Pros
- Body Construction of the plastic fiber, sturdy
- Included Hi-cap magazine
- Foregrip, solid and easy to remove
- Folding Stock
- Carry handle and site
- Easy to upgrade and accessorize with rails
Cons
- Plasticky Cocking handle
- Only 1.5x scope (although it’s great!)
- Can’t mount red dot (yet)
- Weird Sling thing
- Not the most room for batteries
- Trademarks
The pros far outweigh the cons in my situation of mainly Close Woodland day games.
If someone could help me with the things asked it’ll be very much appreciated.
Also stay on the look out for STAR’s new G36 series they look good, but it’s too late for me. Better, however than buying conversion kits for the TM G36c. Maybe I’ll get a SL9. Updates will be made and criticism is welcomed.
